Carolyn has a Human Resource degree with over 40 years of experience in the Human Service field working the gamete from the elderly to babies. Before becoming the Coalition Director she spent 5 years working on an infant mortality prevention research project for Health Promotion Disease Prevention at UNC. In 1991 the Coalition for Families was formed and Carolyn became its first director and has continued in this role for the last 25 years. During her tenure, she has received certificates in Early Childhood Leadership from the University of NC at Chapel Hill, and a certificate in Non Profit Management from Duke University.
She is responsible for overseeing the Coalition’s three directives, the reduction of infant mortality, teen pregnancy prevention and parent support activities. Under her direction the Coalition has won several state and a national award for their work in the teen pregnancy and infant mortality prevention fields.
Carolyn is a native of Sanford and is married to David Spivey, co-owner of Jones Printing. Together they have three grown children, and 6 grandchildren, all who have made Sanford their home. She is an active member at First Baptist Church, having served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. She has also enjoyed many leadership roles on various committees. She has also served over the years on numerous community boards and committees. Currently she serves on the School Health Advisory, United Way Executive Directors and the Youth leadership Committees.
In her free time Carolyn enjoys, traveling, boating, cooking and devoting her time to her 6 precious grandchildren. She also has a dog named Henry who treats her each morning by bringing in the newspaper.
